Ballet DeSoto's Nutcracker productions date back to 1999 having moved performances to DeSoto County in 2003. Our early presentations upheld the traditional format of this family holiday classic. Due to scheduling conflicts, our 2005 dates fell in October, much too early to perform the traditional Christmas-time story! Being a rather creative group, company members and directors began to put together what would eventually lead to the most unique Nutcracker variations ever staged! The Nutcracker Masquerade took the Stahlbaum's to a fabulous Masquerade Ball complete with exquisite masks for the adults and modern day trick or treating for the children! Act 2 was mostly left in traditional format. 2006 brought us closer to Christmas time but the creative flow continued. With traditional Nutcracker formats being performed professionally throughout the Mid-South, Ballet Desoto committed to continue with the unique plan. Nutcracker In New York took Clara on a wonderful journey to the Big Apple, complete with Rockettes, Macy's Parade, The statue of Liberty, F. A. O. Schwartz, and more. This season, with a fun subway scene, brought us our first adaption of hip hop for classical music! By this time, our audience was hooked on "themed" performances. Our 5th anniversary at the DCC Theater demanded something huge ~ the best theme ever. What could be more fun than a retro Nutcracker? And what 70's family could take us there? A Very Brady Nutcracker was 2007's big hit of the fall! The whole Brady clan, and Alice, hosted the biggest names in 70's pop culture ~ Sonny and Cher, Charlie's Angels, Wonder Woman, Luke Skywalker, the Village People and of course, Elvis Presley. This production allowed for experimenation with remixes of all sorts; who knew Aretha Franklin would mix so well with Tchaikovsky! Thanks to modern orchestral styles and remaking classical music with a rock sound, our Act 2 was right in step with the theme. Nutcracker 2008 brought us "Dorothy and the Nutcracker" and a fun trip from the Emerald City to The Kingdom of Sweets. In 2009, "The Nutcracker's Vegas Wedding" toured legendary Vegas ~ Blue Man Group, old lady Bingo parlor, gardens and galleries and of course an oficial elvis Wedding Chapel. Nutcracker '10 brought us "The Nutcracker's World Tour", for a most unique twist with tons of opportunity for all ages. The 2011 version, "The Nutcracker in Candyland", takes us on a through a magical maze of sweets: peppermints and chocolate drops, peanut brittle, lollipops, gingerbread and gum drops!
